Best Hot Water Bottles for Cramps and Period Pains

Using the best hot water bottle for cramps and period pains can make a huge difference to how severe and how long your cramps last.

Heat therapy has been proven to ease menstrual pain. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, I think we’ve all used something warm to ease pains and cramps before.

What is often overlooked however is just how effective hot water bottles are. Hot water bottles are probably the easiest, least expensive, and for some people the most effective ways to ease cramps.

So, if you’ve never tried using a hot water bottle or haven’t positive results, hopefully, this article is going to help.

I’ve listed some of the best hot water bottles to help ease cramps, as well as some info on how to use them properly.

How to Safely Fill a Hot Water Bottle

Hot water bottles are simple to use but there are a few safety points to be aware of if you’ve not used one before.

Firstly, the most common mistake people make is filling their water bottle with boiling water You should never use boiling water, you can potentially burn or scald yourself using boiling water.

You can boil the water first, but always leave it to stand for 5 minutes or so before filling your bottle.

When you have some hot water ready, remove the lid which should twist off, and remove any covers in case you spill any water.

When filling the bottle be very careful where you’re holding it and not to spill any on your hands. Almost all bottles are designed with a wide neck and entry to make this as easy as possible.

Only fill the bottle ⅔ full too. Filling it to the max is another common mistake people make, but again it’s for safety reasons so it’s important to not fill bottles above ⅔’s.

Next, push out most of the air and tighten the lid so it’s watertight. Dry off any water you’ve spilled on the bottle, replace the cover and you’re ready to go.

Using a hot water bottle to relieve menstrual cramps couldn’t be any easier. Just make sure your bottle isn’t too hot, has a nice comfy cover on and find the best spot to place it on your abdomen or back.

Then lay back with a good book or film, relax, concentrate on your breathing if the pain is really bad, and let the heat therapy get to work.

There are plenty of studies that have shown heat therapy from a water bottle can be just as effective as over-the-counter pain medications, and it’s a lot more comforting.

Harbour Housewares Hot Water Bottle with Knitted Cover

Harbour Housewares Hot Water Bottle with Knitted Cover

This is very similar to a hot water bottle I’ve had since I was a kid. Seeing the classic knitted cover brought back some warm (yes, pun) memories, so I have to recommend this one.

Sometimes the feel of the fluffy covers can be a bit irritating, or maybe they just aren’t your style. If that’s the case then hopefully I found what you’re looking for in this hot water bottle.

Not a lot more to say outside of the cover. It’s a standard water bottle inside, with enough glowing feedback to make it an easy purchase.

Don’t forget that hot water bottles make for excellent gifts too, especially in the winter months when it’s cold (ahem, Christmas)!

Unicorn, Monkey, Pug, and Sheep Novelty Hot Water Bottles

Who said hot water bottles have to be plain and boring? Not me! This 1-liter bottle is disguised as a fluffy animal.

These are great for kids, doubling up as a snuggle buddy while providing heat. But just as fun for adults too.

They are well-designed and look cute. Made from soft, plush materials for comfort, and don’t worry their dangling limbs don’t get in the way.

I’m sure you’ll agree, receiving thermotherapy from a monkey or a unicorn is much more effective, so why not give one of these pets a new home if you’re looking for a hot water bottle?

Peru-Design Cover Hot Water Bottle

Peru-Design Cover Hot Water Bottle

This is a really popular hot water bottle model. It’s a 2-liter water bottle with what the sellers advertise as a Peru-design.

I can see the South American flavors in the cover. It’s very colorful, but more importantly, the cover serves its purpose as a comfy cover that protects you against burning your skin and keeps the bottle warmer longer.

The water bottle is thermoplastic and will stay warm for hours. Great for either warming you up on a chilly winter’s night, or nursing cramps, aches, pains, and other issues that can be treated with heat therapy.
