If your allergies are keeping you awake at night the most likely reason is going to be dust mites hiding out in your mattress, bedding, pillow, and pillow cover.
Don’t worry, it’s not because you’ve not been dusting enough that you have dust mites. In fact, just dusting isn’t going to be enough to kill and remove all the dust mites.
There are some products on the market that can help, but these tend to use harsh chemicals and I’m not the biggest fan of using them where I sleep.
Which is why I turned to essential oils for dust mites. I’ve found essential oils work really well and have the added benefit of smelling great and some additional health benefits.

What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are the concentrated form of plants, seeds, flowers, herbs, and other parts of plants that have been extracted in oil form.
From roses to lemongrass, there are literally thousands of different plants that can have oil extracted, and each oil contains its own unique healing and wellness properties.
Although not approved or recognized as a drug or medicine, essential oils are used in aromatherapy to treat a wide range of emotional and physical wellness issues.
Some have proven to be very effective at killing dust mites and removing annoying allergens that are causing your allergic reactions and running a good night’s sleep too as I’ll explain.
How to Use Essential Oils for Dust Mites
First of all, I need to point out some precautions. Never let essential oils come into contact with your skin directly, and always use under the advice of your doctor if you have any health conditions.
With the safety stuff out of the way, here are the main methods you can you use clear all those dust mites out of your bedroom:
Mixing with Baking Soda
Baking soda is really effective at cleaning mattresses and leaves them looking and smelling fresh.
Mix in a few drops of one of the essential oils below and you have a powerful cleaning mixture that will also leave your mattress and bedding free from dust mites.
Diffuse in Your Bedroom
If you want to take the easy option then let a diffuser do all the work for you. Just add some oil and water and switch it on.
Diffusers spray a fine mist into the air. So you can breathe in the oils and enjoy the wellness properties, and the dust mites will get as far away from the scent as possible.
Make a Water/Oil Spray
This is exactly as it sounds. Mix some water with a few drops of essential oil in a spray bottle and you can use it as much as you like across all your bedding and other areas you think there are mites.
Just be careful not to saturate any areas you’re going to be sleeping on!
Best Essential Oils for Dust Mites
There are lots of essential oils that are great for killing and repelling bugs. There was a scientific study into dust mites in particular carried out by the Alexandria University, however, and the five most effective oils were as follows:
Clove Essential Oil
Clove proved to be the most effective oil for killing off dust mites and reducing the allergy triggers in the area being treated. So, it’s ideal for use in your bedroom.
Personally, I love the smell of clove oil. If you haven’t smelled it, it has a warm and spicy scent with a strong earthy tone.
Chamomile Essential Oil

Used for its ability to help ease digestion, soothe skin irritation, and help with relaxation, chamomile is also very effective at purging dust mites.
I already have a bottle of chamomile as it blends so well with other oils. I recommend picking some up if you’re interested in experimenting with oils as well as ridding your home of dust mites.
Chenopodium Essential Oil
This is an unusual oil and I will admit I’d never heard of it before reading the results of the study. Upon reading up on it it’s an interesting oil however.
Primarily used to treat intestinal worms and some similar issues it’s not an oil easy to come across. Effective at clearing bed mites however, so keep that in mind if you see some.
Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary is another oil known for its relaxing and soothing properties, so it’s an oil to enjoy while you’re using it around the home to rid those allergy-triggering dust mites.
It has a nice scent if you’re using it in your bedroom and will help you sleep better too. I love using rosemary oil and recommend picking some up.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus oil is one of the best for helping with colds and viruses that cause breathing issues, a stuffy nose, and things of that nature.
If a blocked nose is one of your allergy symptoms I recommend using this oil to kill the dust mites as you’ll enjoy your new found clear breathing while using it.
So, there you have it. 5 different essential oils for dust mites that have been proven to be effective in ridding these annoying little pests from bedding and other areas you treat.
